Is it legal to sell food made at home?

Yes, within rules that vary by county. California allows home food businesses through the Cottage Food program and, in participating counties, MEHKO permits. Every Chefora chef certifies in writing that they hold the permits their local law requires, and chefs who document those permits display them as badges on their profile.

How do you check that a chef is who they say they are?

Every chef connects a bank account through Stripe before they can be paid, and Stripe verifies their legal name, date of birth and Social Security number against official records first. A real, identifiable person is behind every kitchen — nobody sells here anonymously. This confirms identity; it is not a criminal background check, and we don't claim otherwise. A person on our team also reviews every application before a chef goes live.

What if my order is wrong, late, or never shows up?

Request a refund from the order in the app and our team reviews it. Because you paid inside Chefora rather than by cash or a peer-to-peer transfer, there's a record of the transaction and someone to escalate to.

I have a food allergy. How is that handled?

Every dish must declare its allergens before it can be listed — chefs either select them or explicitly confirm there are none. Please read them carefully. These are home kitchens, not allergen-free facilities, so cross-contact is possible. If your allergy is severe, message the chef before ordering.

Who can see my address and phone number?

Only the chef fulfilling your order, and only what they need to complete it. Choosing pickup means you never share a delivery address at all. Your card details are handled by our payment processor and are never stored by Chefora.

What protects chefs?

Payment is collected before the food is made, so there's no chasing anyone for money. Chefs choose pickup or delivery and control what they share. Reviews only come from real orders, so nobody can be rated by someone who never bought anything — and chefs can report or block abusive buyers.
